In the Romantic ballad ‘Where Helen Lies’, Burns tells of the tragic death of Fair Helen of Kirkconnel (the churchyard at Springkell), which has become a famous Scottish tale. Helen and her lover were shot by a rival on the Kirtle, the river running through Springkell.
